Here is why FFXV will work and FFXIII did not. FFXIII took for ever to make due to there being arguments between what was actually being made among the staff, everyone had different visions - this is according to the interview I read when Enix felt the need to apologise for the mess FFXIII ended up being. The game was just a bunch of ideas which never meshed to make a good game. The battle system, Lightning, the whole Pulse/Cocoon thing and the graphics, none of it came together to make anything remotely good. It was a half-arsed game by any standard, a straight line, dragging the player from melodrama to melodrama, no NPCs, the Crystarium which was so pointless, not being able to return to any locations, not caring about anything... Urgh ranting...
Enter Nomura, as a director he has one thing FFXIII failed to figure out, a vision. He will whip those idiots into shape and make the game he wants, everyone else be damned, and regardless of what anyone else thinks. I think Versus is something to get excited for because we might actually have a game that will be like the old generations, by no means perfect, but impressive and enjoyable.
Where's this interview in which Square Enix apologizes because Final Fantasy XIII was crap? I agree that it's crap, but why would a company say their own game sucks when it sold millions and got great reviews from both print and online publications?
There have been comments by SE which have been generally unfavorable of FFXIII. Generally they've mentioned how they couldn't get proper playtesting from Western audiences, and often passively aggressively bemoan how nobody really understood what they were trying to do with the game.
And even though SE will never apologize directly for FFXIII, we can be very certain that they will NEVER make an RPG that's twenty hours of straight line walking again.

Ironically, Man of Steel actually could have been solved rather easily if Superman and General Zod had just talked for five minutes. "Zod, I can't let you kill all these Earthlings. Couldn't you possibly Krypton-form Mars? Or Venus? We got plenty of planets here, dude."
